Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't my target weight calculate?
PlatePal can only calculate weights that are physically achievable with your current plate inventory. For example, if your smallest plate is 2.5 lb, the app can only hit weights in increments of 5 lb (2.5 lb per side × 2). If a weight can't be loaded exactly, PlatePal will suggest the nearest achievable weight above and below your target.
Check your plate inventory in Settings → Plate Inventory to make sure the right plates are enabled.
How do I switch between pounds and kilograms?
Go to Settings (tap the gear icon) and select your preferred unit system under "Units." All weights, plate denominations, and barbell presets will switch automatically.
My gym has a different barbell. Can I set a custom weight?
Yes. In Settings, tap "Barbell" and choose "Custom" to enter any barbell weight. This is useful for EZ bars, trap bars, or specialty barbells that don't match the standard Olympic presets.
What is the Reverse Calculator?
The Reverse Calculator (free for everyone) lets you build up a weight by tapping plates instead of entering a target. It's handy when you're loading the bar incrementally and want the running total. Load and Reverse share one working weight, so a number you type on Load is already there when you switch to Reverse, and the other way around.
Can I ask Siri how to load my barbell?
Yes. Say "How do I load my barbell in PlatePal?" (or run it from the Shortcuts app) and Siri asks for your target weight, then reads back and shows the exact plates to put on each side, using your active gym profile's bar, plates, and units — the same result you'd see on the Load screen. You can say the weight in any unit, like "225 pounds" or "100 kilograms"; if it differs from your profile's unit, PlatePal converts it and tells you.
Prefer to open the app? Say "Show me how to load my barbell in PlatePal" to jump straight to the Load screen at that weight. To hear answers spoken rather than only shown, enable Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri › Siri Responses › Prefer Spoken Responses.
What is the Workout List?
The Workout List is a quick, session-scoped log. Tap "Add to Workout" on the Load or Reverse screen to record the weight you just hit; on the Workout tab you can reorder them, copy the whole list to paste into your gym or notes app, and clear it when you're done. Each gym profile keeps its own list, so different gyms never mix.
Adding entries is a Pro feature (with a free trial). Viewing and copying a list you've already built is always free.
What does "Unlimited" mean in the Plate Inventory?
Marking a plate denomination as Unlimited tells PlatePal to assume you have an unlimited supply of that plate, like in a commercial gym. This is the default setting for new installs so the app works immediately out of the box.
If you train at home and own specific quantities, switch the relevant plates to a fixed count and PlatePal will only use what you have.
How do I restore my premium purchase?
Go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchases." Your premium access will be restored as long as you're signed in to the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. If you continue to have trouble, please contact us and we'll help sort it out.
What's included in Premium?
Premium unlocks the following features:
- Multi-Gym Profiles let you save separate plate inventories for every gym you train at and switch between them with a tap.
- Multiple Barbells let you save every bar in your gym (Olympic, trap bar, women's bar, and more) and switch between them in a tap without editing your profile.
- Percentage Calculator shows the nearest loadable weight at every percentage from 20% to 120%, right from the “%” button on Load or Reverse.
- Workout List lets you log the weights you hit as you train, reorder them, and copy the list into your gym app. Adding entries is Pro; viewing and copying a list is always free.
- Custom Plate Colors match the barbell visualization to the actual plates in your gym.
- Alternate App Icons let you choose from a selection of alternate icons for your home screen.
The core Load and Reverse calculators, the barbell visualization, and your plate inventory are all free, with no time limit and no trial period. The Percentage Calculator and adding to the Workout List include a free trial.
How do I switch between barbells?
On the Load or Reverse screen, tap the bar label beneath the weight display (e.g. "Olympic (Men's): 45 lb"). A selector sheet will appear listing all the bars saved to your active gym profile. Tap any bar to make it active for the session.
When you switch profiles or restart the app, your default bar is automatically restored. To add or manage bars, go to Settings → Gym Profiles → [Your Profile] → Barbells. The bar at the top of the list is your default. Switching barbells is a Pro feature.
