Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't my target weight calculate?
PlatePal can only calculate weights that are physically achievable with your current plate inventory. For example, if your smallest plate is 2.5 lb, the app can only hit weights in increments of 5 lb (2.5 lb per side × 2). If a weight can't be loaded exactly, PlatePal will suggest the nearest achievable weight above and below your target.
Check your plate inventory in Settings → Plate Inventory to make sure the right plates are enabled.
How do I switch between pounds and kilograms?
Go to Settings (tap the gear icon) and select your preferred unit system under "Units." All weights, plate denominations, and barbell presets will switch automatically.
Can I enter a weight in a different unit than my gym profile uses?
Yes. On the Load tab, tap the "kg" (or "lb") pill beside the weight; it opens a sheet where you can type a number in whichever unit you actually know it in (say, pounds, even if your gym profile is set to kilograms). PlatePal converts it and offers the closest weights your plate inventory can build, rounded up and down, so you can load either one with a single tap.
My gym has a different barbell. Can I set a custom weight?
Yes. In Settings, tap "Barbell" and choose "Custom" to enter any barbell weight. This is useful for EZ bars, trap bars, or specialty barbells that don't match the standard Olympic presets.
What are By Weight and By Plates?
The Load tab has two modes, switched by the By Weight / By Plates control below the weight (or a horizontal swipe). By Weight (the default) is the classic calculator: type a target and PlatePal shows the plates for each side. By Plates (free for everyone) lets you build up a weight by tapping plates instead, handy when you're loading the bar incrementally and want the running total. Both modes share one working weight, so a number you type in By Weight is already there when you switch to By Plates, and the other way around.
Can I ask Siri how to load my barbell?
Yes. Say "How do I load my barbell in PlatePal?" (or run it from the Shortcuts app) and Siri asks for your target weight, then reads back and shows the exact plates to put on each side, using your active gym profile's bar, plates, and units, the same result you'd see on the Load tab. You can say the weight in any unit, like "225 pounds" or "100 kilograms"; if it differs from your profile's unit, PlatePal converts it and tells you.
Prefer to open the app? Say "Show me how to load my barbell in PlatePal" to jump straight to the Load tab at that weight. To hear answers spoken rather than only shown, enable Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri › Siri Responses › Prefer Spoken Responses.
What is the Workout List?
The Workout List is a quick, session-scoped log. Tap "Add to Workout" on the Load tab to record the weight you just hit; on the Workout tab entries are grouped by lift, and you can drag to reorder within a lift, and clear it when you're done. Each gym profile keeps its own list, so different gyms never mix.
When you're done, Copy puts the whole list on your clipboard to paste into your gym or notes app, and Share turns your session into a branded image card: pick a compact card or a full-screen story, reroll the tagline, then post it to Instagram or Messages, or save it to Photos. Or tap Save to Logbook to keep the session for good.
The Workout List is completely free: logging, viewing, copying, sharing, and saving all cost nothing, with no trial and no Pro requirement.
How do I mark warm-ups, link supersets, or record a failed set?
All three live on the Workout tab. Warm-ups: swipe a set and mark it a warm-up; it gets W1/W2 numbering and a flame, and stays out of your stats and share cards. Warm-up ramps: tap the flame in a lift's section header to preview a planned ramp (every step reachable by adding plates you own), then add it as warm-up sets in one tap. Supersets: tap "Link" in the toolbar, select sets across lifts, and confirm; linked sets are labeled A1, A2. Failed sets: swipe a set, choose "Mark failed," and pick how many reps you completed; it shows as a struck-through 3 / 5 instead of pretending it didn't happen.
What is the Logbook? Is it free?
The Logbook (new in 2.0) is where saved sessions live permanently: a timeline of your training, a page for every lift, and rep-max records (1RM, 3RM, 5RM, and more) tracked automatically. Save a session containing a new best and a PR trophy appears; tap it to share a card with the medal already on it. You can also reload any past session onto the Workout tab and run it again.
Browsing is free: the timeline, per-lift lists, PR trophies, filters, and the Data menu (import and export) all cost nothing. Opening a workout for its set-by-set detail and exact rep-maxes is part of PlatePal Pro. To delete a session, swipe its row in the By Date view.
How do I import my history from Strong, Hevy, or SugarWOD?
Go to the Logbook tab → Data menu → Import (Beta). Export a CSV from Strong, Hevy, or SugarWOD, pick the file, and your barbell sessions come in; anything skipped is itemized with a reason so you know exactly what and why. Everything runs on your device; files come in only through the system file picker. "Manage Imports" can remove everything from one source in a tap. You can also restore a PlatePal Backup file. Importing is free, Pro or not.
What does "Unlimited" mean in the Plate Inventory?
Marking a plate denomination as Unlimited tells PlatePal to assume you have an unlimited supply of that plate, like in a commercial gym. This is the default setting for new installs so the app works immediately out of the box.
If you train at home and own specific quantities, switch the relevant plates to a fixed count and PlatePal will only use what you have.
How do I restore my premium purchase?
Go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchases." Your premium access will be restored as long as you're signed in to the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. If you continue to have trouble, please contact us and we'll help sort it out.
What's included in PlatePal Pro?
PlatePal Pro is a single one-time purchase (no subscription, no trial) that unlocks:
- The Full Logbook opens any saved workout for its set-by-set detail and your exact rep-max records, with the history behind each one.
- Multi-Gym Profiles let you save separate plate inventories for every gym you train at and switch between them with a tap.
- Multiple Barbells let you save every bar in your gym (Olympic, trap bar, women's bar, and more) and switch between them in a tap without editing your profile.
- Custom Plate Colors match the barbell visualization to the actual plates in your gym.
- Alternate App Icons let you choose from a selection of alternate icons for your home screen.
The core Load tab (both By Weight and By Plates), the barbell visualization, your plate inventory, the Percentage Calculator, the Workout List (including copy, share, and save), browsing your Logbook, and import and export are all free, with no time limit and no trial period.
How do I switch between barbells?
On the Load tab, tap the bar label above the weight display (e.g. "Olympic (Men's): 45 lb"). A selector sheet will appear listing all the bars saved to your active gym profile. Tap any bar to make it active for the session.
When you switch profiles or restart the app, your default bar is automatically restored. To add or manage bars, go to Settings → Gym Profiles → [Your Profile] → Barbells. The bar at the top of the list is your default. Switching barbells is a Pro feature.
